APM Doublet SD Apo 140 f/7 FPL53 Optical Tube

The new APM 140mm f/9 80mm Doublet is a mold breaker with high quality. We have painstakingly engineered an optical and tube solution to bring you APM quality at an unheard price. The new 140- SD Apo features a Doublet lens cell using SD glass FPL-53 to maximize performance. Our innovative combination of materials and design has resulted in optical performance far beyond the normal for a telescope of this price. As with all APM telescopes consistency is assured and each telescope goes through an interferometrical test at the 532nm (green) wavelength before shipping.

The special feature of the 140mm SD APO:
    •  Very high quality processed and of convincingly good optical quality
    •  Colorless optics with FLP53 glass
    •  Precise 3.7" focuser with 1:10 mirco reduction for heavy accessories
    •  With f / 7 ideal for visual and photographic purposes
    •  CNC tube rings
    •  Carry handle
    •  Very good value for money

With 980mm focal length, the 140-SD Apo is an impressive all-rounder. From intricate double star observing to high contrast detailed planetary views, this new scope will introduce a whole new group of Astronomy enthusiasts to APM quality.

Traditional APM quality has been applied in all areas. The new 3.7" focuser is a Rack and Pinion type, with 1:10 focusing. It remains rigid under high loads making it suitable for imaging. The attention to detail extends to areas like the 2" and 1.25" eyepiece adapters. These use a new design of collar clamp, far superior to the common brass compression rings found on lesser designs.

As optional photo accessory for the SD APO 140 f / 7, we recommend our Riccardi Flattener APO Reducer 0.75xM82 (the focal length is reduced to 735mm at f / 5.25) or our Riccardi APO Flattener Model 2 for APO's. (please look recommended products)

With the new 140 mm SD Apo we believe we have created an Apochromatic Refractor of incomparable performance and value in its category.

    APM 140 FPL53 with 3.7" focuser...

I am proud to say that this the finest refractor that I have ever owned. The optics are incredible , I can use over 80x per inch with no image breakdown. Not many scopes can do that. The star images are pin point and the background is jet black ... a perfect image... almost unbelievable. The doublet cools extremely fast and is ready for observing in minutes. Thanks to Nick and APM for a great scope.

    Great and Impressive Refractor...

Tested the 140mm F-7 980mm FL, with FPL-53 doublet optics today. I have owned several hundred telescopes in my lifetime and as owner of "Ken's Rings and Telescopes Accessories, after 50 years of testing telescopes that I have built and owned, several hundred, this APM140 displays excellent optics and a professional made optical tube assembly. The 3.7" focuser is rock solid and butter smooth...the finest that I have ever seen or used.
For testing optics, I use an artificial star pattern indoors at a distance of 75 feet to test all my scopes. The airy disc shows perfect rings, inside and outside of focus is nearly identical. The baffling inside the tube is jet black with no inside tube reflections or glare even in bright daylight. Using a 6.7mm ES 82 degree ocular and a 3x barlow (438x) The image is extremely sharp even at that power. at approx 100 feet appear razor sharp showing much detail at this power and no visible false color at the leaf edges. I know from experience testing my scopes in this manor that a clear and steady night sky will show amazing detail on lunar and planetary images.
I prefer a doublet over a triplet optical system for several reasons ... since the light output is greater on 2 lenses instead of 3. The wave tolerance error on 4 surfaces (doublet) is much less affected than by 6 surfaces as with a triplet. Also I like the fact that the doublet objective cools quicker and the front of the tube weights less that the heavier triplet making a more pleasing balanced scope. Also the heavier 3.7" focuser and 8x50 finder additionally helps balance the OTA, pushing up the focuser nearer to the mount and extends the objective further out...the way a great refractor should look.
Nick at Skygaze Optics was a pleasure to do business with. He was helpful in every way and keep me informed of my order delivery. Thanks again Nick! ... I will do business with you again.
Again, thanks to Nick at Skygaze Optics and APM for a great impressive refractor!
